ADRA aids in Philippines

29 Dec, 2011

While the Philippines government and non-government organisations work to kick-start clean-up and rebuilding efforts following Typhoon Washi, the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) is providing life-saving essentials to those who survived the deadly disaster.

On Dec 16, 2011, Typhoon Washi made landfall in the eastern parts of Mindanao, Philippines.  In less than 12 hours, the region was inundated with more than a month’s worth of rain, causing severe flash floods and landslides. More than 335,000 people have been affected, and more than 45,000 need emergency shelter and supplies.

The majority of the 957 people killed in the disaster were from the Cagayan de Oro and Iligan Cities, which are among ADRA’s target communities.

As the government prepares mass graves for the victims, ADRA is meeting the immediate needs of survivors by distributing emergency food and water.

In addition, ADRA is working with local banks to make emergency funds available to 1,280 families through an efficient and secure cast transfer program.

“These small cash grants empower families to make choices about their immediate futures – from the food they will eat, to the clothes they will wear,” said Chris Olafson, Director of Emergency Management for ADRA Australia.

“It will also inject money into family and small businesses that would otherwise be left with no other option than to close up.”

To support the survivors of Typhoon Washi, and ADRA Australia’s ongoing Emergency Management work around the world please give to the Disaster Preparedness and Response Fund by calling 1800 24 ADRA or by donating online www.adra.org.au.

In the previous twelve months ADRA has responded to emergencies including the east Africa drought crisis, Japanese earthquake and tsunami, and Pakistan floods. In addition, ADRA Australia has responded to emergencies at home including the south-east Queensland floods, Cyclone Yasi and the Perth bushfires.
ADRA Australia is a Christian aid and humanitarian organisation that empowers communities and changes lives. ADRA Australia works with people in poverty and distress to create just and positive change through empowering partnerships and responsible action.
